Nowadays there are many tarot decks and books available that teach us hoe to use those decks. But it is very difficult to know which meaning to apply to tarot cards. There are so many gurus those have provided conflicting meanings - which one should you use?

Though there are various books available that provide you the meaning of tarot cards, the most personal and best way to develop meaning for them is to study the cards personally. The tarot cards were developed with pictures and symbols, which will help to us to know the meaning of the particular card.

The tarot is made up of 78 cards and the meanings of all the 78 cards are relevant and necessary for the detailed understanding of the whole tarot system. Out of these 78 cards there are 22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards across (Wands, Swords, Pentacles and Cups). Major arcana cards are the first keys to our initial understanding. Below is the interpretations and meanings of each of the 78 Tarot cards.

The Major Arcana

The Major Arcana tarot cards have the most divinatory and symbolic significance. The Tarot deck contains 22 Major Arcana cards numbered from 0 to 21. Each card is individually named and illustrated.

The major arcana cards sometimes referred to as the "trumps" (derived from the world triumphs) of the tarot deck. Some people call them "Atu". Therefore Atu XVIII means "The Moon". The actual meaning of "Major Arcana" is the "Greater Mysteries."

The Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana cards are also called as pip cards. There are total 56 cards that are divided into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles, each with 14 cards. Each of these suits reflects day-to-day activities of our lives.

  • Cups (Water) - Emotions, compassion, feeling, language of Spirit
  • Swords (Fire) - Power, action, motivation, conflict, force
  • Wands (Air) - Ideas, thoughts, communication, concepts, enlightenment
  • Pentacles (Earth) - Manifestation, physical creation, physical expression in the world
